Past Perfect Continuous Tense in Urdu with Examples

Past perfect continuous tense is also called past perfect progressive tense. This tense is used for those actions that started in past and continued for specific time in the past.

اس زمانے کو اردو میں فعل ماضی مکمل جاری کہتے ہیں، اس زمانے کا استعمال ہم ایسے کاموں کے لئے کرتے ہیں جو ماضی میں شروع ہوا تھا اور ماضی میں ہی کسی خاص وقت میں جاری رہا تھا۔

پہچان: اس زمانے کے فقرات کے آخر میں رہا تھا، رہی تھی، رہے تھے، وغیرہ آتا ہے، مگر اس زمانے کے فقرات میں وقت کا ذکر لازمی آتا ہے

Form of Verb and Helping Verb

Form of Verb: 1^st form + ing

Helping Verb: Had been

Use of Since and For

For is used to indicate period or duration of time.

Example:

They had been teaching in a school for 3 years.

وہ تین سالوں سے سکول میں پڑھا رہے تھے۔

Since is used to indicate the point of time.

Example:

She had been learning English since 2002.

وہ 2002 سے انگلش پڑھ رہا تھا۔

Affirmative / Positive Sentences – سادہ فقرات

Structure: Subject + had been + 1^st form + ing + since/for + object +.

He had been playing cricket for 2 days.	وہ دو دن سے کرکٹ کھیل رہا تھا۔
They had been fighting since morning.	وہ صبح سے لڑرہےتھے۔
He had been reading a book for 1 week.	وہ ایک ہفتے سے کتاب پڑھ رہا تھا۔
She had been cooking food since evening.	وہ شام سے کھانا پکا رہی تھی۔
We had been working hard since 2023.	ہم 2023 سے محنت کررہے تھے۔
Akram had been driving for 2 days.	اکرم دودنوں سے گاڑی چلارہاتھا۔
I had been going to university for 5 days.	میں پانچ دنوں سے سکول جارہا تھا۔
The baby had been crying since morning.	بچہ صبح سے رورہا تھا۔
She had been learning Arabic for 3 years.	وہ تین سالوں سے عربی سیکھ رہی تھی۔
He had been going to office for 1 month.	وہ ایک مہینے سے آفس جارہا تھا۔

Negative Sentences – منفی فقرات

Structure: Subject + had not been + 1^st form + ing + since/for + object +.

Note: you can notice by simply adding “not” between “had been” we can make negative sentences of past perfect continuous tense.

She had not been learning English for 2 years.	وہ دو سالوں سے انگلش نہیں پڑھ رہی تھی۔
We had not been playing football since morning.	ہم صبح سےفٹبال نہیں کھیل رہے تھے۔
I had not been going to school since last week.	مییں پچھلے ہفتے سے سکول نہیں جارہاتھا۔
They had not been working hard for 2 months.	وہ دومہینوں سے محنت نہیں کررہے تھے۔
She had not been reading a book since morning.	وہ صبح سے کتاب نہیں پڑھ رہی تھی۔
I had not been calling her since evening.	میں اسے شام سے کال نہیں کررہا تھا۔
Akram had not been writing an article for 3 days.	اکرم تین دنوں سے ایک آرٹیکل نہیں لکھ رہا تھا۔
Shazia had not been going to work for 2 days.	شازیہ دو دنوں سے کام پر نہیں جارہی تھی۔
We had not been washing clothes since morning.	ہم صبح سے کپڑے نہیں دھورہے تھے۔
He had not been fighting since night.	وہ شام سے نہیں لڑھ رہا تھا۔

Interrogative Sentences – سوالیہ فقرات

Structure: Had + Subject + been + 1^st form + ing + since/for + object + ?

Note: we can make interrogative sentences of this tense by adding “subject” between “had been”.

Had she been cooking since evening?	کیا وہ شام سے کھانا پکا رہی تھی؟
Had we been going to college since last week?	کیا ہم پچھلے ہفتے سے کالج جارہے تھے؟
Had Akram been fighting for 2 days?	کیا اکرم دودنوں سے لڑھ رہا تھا؟
Had he been working since morning?	کیا وہ صبح سے لڑھ رہا تھا؟
Had she been reading a book for 1 week?	کیا وہ ایک یفتےسے کتاب پڑھ رہا تھا؟
Had they been playing for 1 month?	کیا وہ ایک مہینے سے کھیل رہے تھے؟
Had the baby been weeping since night?	کیا بچہ رات سے رورہا تھا؟
Had we been learning Arabic for 1 month?	کیاہم ایک مہینے سے عربی سیکھ رہے تھے؟
Had Shazia been writing a book for 3 days?	کیا شازیہ تین دنوں سے کتاب لکھ رہی تھی؟
Had he been telling a lie since morning?	کیا وہ صبح سے جھوٹ بول رہا تھا؟
