Definition of Adjective in English and Urdu with Examples
Adjectives are words that modify and add extra meaning to a noun or a pronoun.
OR
The words that go with nouns and tell us something about them are called adjectives.
وہ لفظ جوکسی اسم یا ضمیر کی اچھائی یا برائی اورتعدادیامقدار وغیرہ ظاہر کرے اسے اردو میں اسم صفت کہےہیں۔
Examples of Adjective
| Akram is a fat boy. | اکرم موٹا لڑکا ہے۔ |
| I have twenty rupees. | میرےپاس بیس روپے ہیں۔ |
| She is an intelligent girl. | وہ ایک ذہین لڑکی ہے۔ |
| This is a new book. | یہ ایک نئی کتاب ہے۔ |
| I have a little water. | میرے پاس تھوڑا ساپانی ہے۔ |
In the above sentences “intelligent, new, and fat” shows the quality of a noun. “Little” shows the uncountable quantity and “twenty” shows the quantity in numbers. These all are adjectives.
Kinds of Adjective with English and Urdu Examples
Below are the kinds of adjectives with English and Urdu Examples.
Adjective of Quality: صفت ذاتی
وہ الفاظ جو کسی اسم یا ضمیرکی ذاتی اچھائی یا برائی کوظاہر کریں۔
Examples:
| Shabana is a good girl. | شبانا ایک اچھی لڑکی ہے۔ |
| He is an honest person. | وہ ایک ایماندار آدمی ہے۔ |
| They are intelligent. | وہ ذہین ہیں۔ |
In the above example sentences “good, honest, intelligent” are adjectives of quality.
Adjective of Quantity: صفت مقداری
وہ اسم جو مقدارکوظاہرکریں۔
Examples:
| I have a little milk. | میرے پاس تھوڑاسا دودھ ہے۔ |
| He has enough water. | اس کے پاس کافی پانی ہے۔ |
| There is some water in the glass. | گلاس میں تھوڑا سا پانی ہے۔ |
In these sentences “little, enough and some” are adjective of quantity.
Adjective of Number: صفت عددی
وہ الفاظ جوکسی چیز کی تعداد کو ظاہر کریں۔
Examples:
| I have one hundred rupees. | میرے پاس سوروپے ہیں۔ |
| Two boys are in the room. | کمرے میں دو لڑکے ہیں۔ |
| Ten pens are on the table. | دس قلم میزپر ہیں۔ |
| Three students are absent. | تین شاگرد غیرحاضرہیں۔ |
In the above-mentioned sentences “one hundred, two, ten, three” are adjectives of numbers.
Demonstrative Adjective: صفت اشاری
وہ لفظ جو کسی اسم کی طرف اشارہ کرنے کے لئے استعمال ہو۔
Examples:
| This is my book. | یہ میری کتاب ہے۔ |
| That is her car. | یہ اس کی گاڑی ہے۔ |
| Those are my children. | وہ میرے بچے ہیں۔ |
| These are her pens. | یہ اس کے قلم ہیں۔ |
In the above-mentioned sentences “this, that, those and these” are demonstrative adjectives.
Possessive Adjective: صفت ملکیت
وہ لفظ جوکسی اسم کے ملکیت کو ظاہرکرے۔
Examples:
| This is my car. | یہ میری گاڑی ہے۔ |
| That is your book. | وہ کتاب تماری ہے۔ |
| Those are your toys. | وہ کھلونےتمھارے ہیں۔ |
| These are our books. | یہ کتابیں ہماری ہیں۔ |
